2021 in Review for the esqLABS Team

2021 in Review for the esqLABS Team

In 2021, for our fourth year, the esqLABS team has again grown in numbers. After doubling our size in 2020, we were again able to grow our esqLABS family by 50%, with new colleagues, and exciting client projects.

Despite the challenges of the current times, our company continues positioning its modeling & simulation and software expertise in the pharmaceutical sector and emerged with fast growth in next-generation risk assessment (NGRA) for the chemical and cosmetics industry. This would not have been possible without the trust of our clients, the close collaboration with industrial partners and academia, and the passion and commitment of the esqLABS team.

In this fourth successful year, we welcomed Huan Yang, Walter Schmitt, Luis Franco, Indra Patil, and Alicia Paini to the team. Even though they joined only some months ago, they have already proven their excellence and reliability on client and research projects in the areas of pharma/toxicokinetics and effect modeling, in academic collaborations, regulatory affairs, and in supporting the (software) development activities of the Open Systems Pharmacology Software Suite with PK-Sim® and MoBi®, and R packages – our main modeling & simulation tools. Moreover, our first fully esqLABS-sponsored doctoral candidate René Geci will join us on the 1st of January 2022 to support our non-animal methods (NAM) modeling & simulation pipeline for NGRA in toxicology.

The growth of our team was accompanied by substantial growth in the yearly project volume. We are proud of having finalized more than 30 new client projects to satisfaction in 2021, confirming the trust that our customers have placed in us, and reinforcing our commitment to excellence. In addition, we are excited to have won and kicked off two European research grants in the area of toxicology and are part of a promising consortium of an MSC-ITN grant application in the area of immuno-oncology. Lastly, we conducted several dedicated client workshops for the Open Systems Pharmacology Suite (OSPS), including the training of FDA scientists on this modeling & simulation platform.

The year was successful and intense, and there was also time for having fun together. Although we work from all over Europe, we enjoyed two face-to-face meetings in Germany. One in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and one in Cologne, which helped to strengthen our bonds as a team. We climbed the highest peak of Germany, swam in a beautiful lake, played laser tag, and enjoyed the warming glow of Glühwein together.

To sum up, 2021 was a great year for esqLABS, full of challenges and achievements. We will keep on working hard and having fun so that 2022 can be even better.

So stay tuned, stay healthy, and we hope to meet all of you again in person in 2022!
Luis-David Jimenez-Franco
